KHADIJA Rashid won ten bouts to be the winner of the Zanzibar Young stars Judo Cup played at the Budokan Hall in the Isles. Khadija outsmarted Abdulshakur Talib of Mlandege Club during a well played final game and was eventually awarded a gold medal plus a package of stationaries from Japan.
The runner up, Twalib, who won nine games settled for a silver medal plus stationaries while Ibrahim Mohamed (Budokan) finished third with six wins and was given a bronze medal. President of the Zanzibar Judo Association (ZJA), Tsuyoshi Shimaoka who is also chief organizer, said more than 60 youth took part in the one-day event.
He was impressed by the participation and performance of female judokas at the event saying it was a good sign of the acceptance of the game by the people from all walks of life.
"The top three winners joined judo in the past two years, I am happy to see them growing up with excellent performance, they have a very good promising future," he sai.
He was of the views that should parents allow their children play judo from a tender age, the country will win medals in various continental and international tournaments since there is abundance of talents. Speaking at the medal giving ceremony, Executive Secretary of the Zanzibar Film Board, Suleiman Mbarouk Suleiman said taking part in the sports is good for the student's education career.
