Somalia: Galkayo Residents Elect First Mayor

Galkayo residents on Sunday (February 17th) elected Bile Bashir Aynab as the city's first democratically elected mayor, UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported.

Aynab will assume the post from outgoing mayor Seynab Osman Ali after defeating Said Salad Elmi in an election held at the Embassy Hotel. Elmi conceded defeat and congratulated Aynab.

Previously, the president appointed mayors.

In his acceptance speech, Aynab lauded the city's first democratic election and vowed to improve social services, especially health and education. Mohamed Ali Hassan and Osman Aded Elmi were elected mayoral deputies.
