From March 1, 2013, I will step down as editor-in-chief of LEADERSHIP Newspapers Group. Since October 1, 2004, when we first published LEADERSHIP as a weekly newspaper (a successor to the stunningly successful newsletter, LEADERSHIP Confidential), I have, with the help and dedication of a small team, borne the burden of beating a path, providing direction and watching the company grow, despite many odds. I founded the newspaper, built it from scratch and nurtured it. Today, it has grown to five newspaper titles, six subsidiary companies and several Internet assets.
It is time for me to step down and let the company grow up. If this news is received in some quarters with a genuine sense of dread about the future of our newspapers, I can understand. But there is no cause for alarm. In the last two years or so, we have assembled a team of professionals who have been working flat out to make our products better and better every day. We have invested - and will keep investing - in human capital, innovation and technology. This will not only strengthen our capacity, it will secure our future and ensure that our platforms keep growing from strength to strength.
Apart from being the only Nigerian newspaper on the ipad and iphone, LEADERSHIP is one of the most improved online platforms, according to the rating of the global online ranking agency, alexa.com. We have grown to become not just content providers but a foremost media and education company in the country.
We have not arrived yet. I am confident, however, that with the wind at our back and with God on our side, we're well on the way.
I will remain chairman of LEADERSHIP Newspapers and chairman of LEADERSHIP Group. I will also remain chairman of our subsidiary companies. I will maintain my column every Monday and will, as always, be entirely responsible for the views expressed therein.
I am confident that the current handlers will build on our legacy as one of the country's most vibrant and trusted brands to deliver even better value and a more secure future in our service for God and country.
The future is very, very bright.
