Nigeria: Abuja Police Boss Pledges Efficient Policing

The commissioner gave his maiden speech as Abuja police boss on Tuesday.

The new Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Femi Ogunbayode, has said the police will help to resuscitate students' unionism in schools as a way of checking crime.

Mr. Ogunbayode said this in his maiden speech as the Abuja police commissioner on Tuesday in the Nigerian capital.

The police boss also promised to evolve new strategies in combating crime and meeting security challenges in the Nigerian capital.

He said his administration would maintain an open - door policy to ensure effective policing in the Abuja.

Mr. Ogunbayode, a former police commissioner of the counter terrorism unit, said the expansion of the scope of the police to all parts of Abuja will be done to sustain peace in Abuja and its environs.

He said the police will continue to partner with other security agencies as the lead agency in internal security operations in Abuja.

The police boss advised any person with useful information to forward it to the police, promising to be discreet with such; while stating that confidentiality of information is a dual responsibility of the person providing the information and the police.

Seven senior police officers were decorated as part of the briefing.
