Namibia: Ship Captain Likely Committed Suicide

A SHIP captain who remains missing after his disappearance from an Indian vessel probably committed suicide, said Karas Police Commissioner Armas Shivute.

"The possibilities are that he committed suicide by jumping overboard," said Shivute.

The captain, an Indian citizen, was identified as Mohideepsingh Mahendrasingh (41).

Shivute said the police released 14 crew members who were on board after they were questioned in connection with Mahendrasingh's disappearance.

The head of South Point Shipping Agents, Angelo Isaaks, yesterday said Mahendrasingh arrived in Lüderitz with six other crew members, and they sailed off on February 12 at around 24h00 after a ship crew change. The crew only realised that the captain had gone missing the next morning at around 05h00.

Isaaks said the vessel was on its way from Rio de Janeiro to Port Louis in Mauritius.
