Liberia: Man Brutalized, Handcuffed On Hospital Bed

The County Attorney of Sinoe County, John A. Gabriel has been accused of ordering the illegal arrest and handcuffing of an unconscious man while on his hospital bed in Greenville. According to information gathered in the county by our correspondent, Mr. Christopher Ong, Operation Manager of Atlantic Resource was arrested and handcuffed upon the orders of the County Attorney at the Air port. Our information is that Mr. Ong fainted and was rushed to a local clinic in Greenville as a result of the brutal and inhumane arrest on his hospital bed while unconscious.

According to the report, Atty. Gabriel on February 14, 2013 at about 2:30:00 p.m. called Christopher Ong, ordering him to report to his office regarding a matter involving another man who allegedly assaulted one Jestina Doe. Further information was based on the request from |Atty. Gabriel that Mr. Ong promised to send the Human Resource Manager or another person who knew the facts and circumstances of the matter and who had also been involved in prior discussions but the County Attorney then demanded that Mr. Ong appear before him or be arrested.

Mr. Ong told our correspondent in Sinoe that he had an urgent scheduled flight to Monrovia and therefore, pleaded with the County Attorney to honor his request upon his return from Monrovia, but the County Attorney refused. Mr. Ong also informed our correspondent that because of threatening remarks to arrest him, though he had not committed any crime, he immediately informed his legal counsels of the threat from the County Attorney.

He alleged that his lawyers immediately contacted the County Attorney pleading with him not to arrest their client because the man who allegedly assaulted Ms. Doe was on vacation to return soon and that they should wait until he returns.

He said during the commotion, the Senior Senator of the County Senator Maboutu Nyenpan and other officials of the county tried to intervene to have him (Ong) released but the County Attorney according to the Senator, did not answer their calls.

Meanwhile, lawyers representing the legal interest of Mr. Christopher Ong have filed a formal complaint to the Minister of Justice, Cllr. Christina Tah over the alleged arrest and humiliation of their client. The lawyers want the Ministry of Justice to intervene in the alleged brutality meted out against their client and that stringent administrative actions be imposed upon the County Attorney, where he is found to have ordered the brutal arrest of their client for no justifiable or legal basis in order to prevent the reoccurrence of this ugly act.

The question, Mr. Ong wants answered, is what interest does the County Attorney have in Jestina Doe to brutalize him without cause? Legal interest? Social interest? Or what?
