Overview of Development Projects in The Gambia under President Jammeh's Leadership: 1994 to 2012, (2012), 234 pages, illustrated with over 280 colour photographs - EXCERPTS FROM REVIEW BY BENJAMIN A ROBERTS, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF GAMBIA TOURISM BOARD

The Republic of The Gambia, our beloved nation, celebrated its 48th Independence Anniversary on the 18th of February 2013.Out of these years of independence, the Alliance for Patriotic Re-orientation and Construction (APRC), formerly the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC) holds responsibility for the last 18 years.

The number eighteen is indeed symbolic, and in The Gambia represents both the age of suffrage and the age at which one comes of age.It is therefore appropriate, at this befitting juncture in the economic and political history of The Gambia to ask what has the Administration of the APRC, under the leadership of President Jammeh, achieved since assuming the mantle of power in 1994; some 18 years ago?

To answer the above question, Mr. Ebrima Jawara, a son to our first and former President, Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, has authored a book, published by Transphere (a Gambian publishing house), documenting a good selection of the development projects of His Excellency, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh from 1994 to 2012.

In this epic documentary of 15 chapters, Mr. Jawara attempts to chronicle the development projects undertaken and promoted by President Jammeh in the areas of Education, Health, Trade & Private Sector Development, Security, Governance, Agriculture, Tourism, Youth & Sports to name a few.

The author defines development projects as all the legislations passed, programmes and policies devised and implemented, civil works and construction undertaken, projects implemented, diplomatic interventions and so on and so forth.

We are informed early in the documentary work, that the economic and business environment, notable of which include the overriding economic environment, the existing Fiscal and Monetary Policy, the developments within the External Sector, and the issues of Governance, Transparency, and Accountability necessitated the strategies adopted by President Jammeh to deliver the economic development projects realized in the period under review.

The end results of the President's noble development efforts as recognized and acknowledged by countless international and local institutions and personalities, are highlighted in Chapter 14 (Accolades) and Chapter 15 (Quotations and Correspondences). The Gambia stands at a critical crossroad in its economic development aspirations and with the extensive list of achievements thus far documented in this epic work, we are only reassured that President Jammeh has more in store for us.

Come and remind yourselves of the various developmental projects that unfolded over the last 18 years, when the book is launched under the Distinguished Chief Patronage of the President of the Republic of The Gambia, H E Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya A J J Jammeh, on 23 February 2013 at 10.00am, at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.

This event is part of the Official Programme of Activities for The Gambia's 48th Independence Anniversary Celebrations.
