Somalia: Dutch, Spanish Navies Capture Nine Suspected Pirates Off Somali Coast

The Dutch and Spanish navies captured nine suspected pirates in a joint operation off the coast of Somalia on Tuesday (February 19th), AFP reported.

The Dutch frigate De Ruyter, stationed in the Gulf of Aden, dispatched a helicopter in response to a distress call from a Panamanian-flagged vessel. The helicopter stopped a high-speed boat and detained some of the people on board.

Spanish frigate Mendez Nunez dispatched a second helicopter, which intercepted another speedboat, detaining more suspects. All of the suspects are detained aboard the Dutch ship.

The Dutch Ministry of Defence said people aboard the speedboats had thrown objects overboard and tried to escape in different directions.
