Nigeria: Union Bank Employee Allegedly Bolts With N6 Million

An employee of Union Bank Plc, Morenike Ariyibi, on Wednesday appeared before a Yaba Magistrates' Court over alleged theft of N6 million belonging to the bank.

Ariyibi, 39, who resides at No. 32, Ebwerie St., Okota-- a Lagos suburb-- is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, ASP Felix Ifijen, told the court that the accused committed the offences, using her office as an employee of Ladipo branch of the bank.

According to him, the N6 million was stolen between June 2011 and August 2012 through, falsification of records.

"Ariyibi withdrew the money from the bank without authorisation between June 2011 and August 2012, after she had falsified the records," Ifijen said.

The prosecutor noted that the offences contravened Sections 278 and 285 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

Ariyibi pleaded not guilty of the offences.

Ruling on the bail application of the accused, the magistrate, Mrs P.A. Ojo, granted her bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Further hearing has been fixed for March 14. NAN
