The Academic Staff Union of College of Education, Azare, Bauchi State, COEASU, has demanded the immediate removal of Alhaji Aliyu Shehu, as registrar of the college, warning that it would not call off its strike unless its demand was met.
Chairman of the union, Mr. Sanusi Ibrahim, disclosed this, yesterday, while addressing newsmen at the NUJ secretariat in Bauchi.
He said that the measure was necessary to restore the falling standard of education in the institution and prevent a situation whereby the system would be polluted by saboteurs.
The union accused the Governing Council of the college of insensitivity by re-appointing Alhaji Shehu as the registrar inspite of the fact that it was fully aware of the situation on ground.
He said: "A letter dated January 30, 2013, was officially written to the governing council of the institution warning them to bury the interest of re-appointing Aliyu Shehu as registrar, since he has lost the acceptance of the college. The call for his removal from office is not intended to smear the image of the administration of Alhaji Isa Yuguda, but to add value to the educational development in the state."
He said that the union was ready to call off the strike and sheath its sword as soon as the government announced the disengagement of the registrar.
"Already academic activities have been grounded in the institutution with the announcement of the re-appointment of the registrar. The strike action by the union is to press home the demands of the association. We see the reappointment of Alhaji Shehu as unacceptable because it lacks the approval of the generality of the staff, hence Governor Yuguda should intervene to restore academic activities in the institution," Sanusi said.
