Nigeria: Don Advocates Review of Penal Code

A Professor of Criminology, University of Abuja, Femi Adekunle, has called on the Federal Government to urgently review the nation's penal code if the country is to be rid of corruption.

Adekunle spoke against the backdrop of the recent sentence to two years imprisonment with an option of N750,000 fine of Mr. John Yakubu for stealing N23bn Nigeria Police Pension Fund.

Adekunle who spoke in Abuja said the nation's criminal justice system must be restructured in order to effectively tackle corruption.

"The body of laws relating to crimes and offences and the penalties for their commission encourages corruption and provides escape for criminals. There is need for more certain punishment for corruption, with less cumbersome/technical procedures that provide loopholes for 'escape' of such criminals."
