Nigeria: Journalist Jailed Six Months for Dangerous Driving

An Abuja Magistrate Court has sentenced a 29-year-old photo journalist to six months imprisonment for driving dangerously on a highway.

Idoko Isaiah of Asokoro was convicted for dangerous driving, causing obstruction and driving without driver's license, offences contrary to Sections 28, 39 sub 3 and 36 of Road Traffic Act.

Police Prosecutor, Igono Ochoni, had told the court that a Police Patrol Team led by CPL Madu Stanley, while on patrol along Kubwa Expressway on February 13, caught the accused with a Nissan Almera, believed to be property of Bectex Nig. Ltd.

He said the accused had no driver's license and drove in a reckless manner, in a way that endangered lives and property of other road users.

When the charges were read to the accused, he denied driving without license but accepted driving dangerously as well as causing obstruction on the highway, and asked the court to tamper justice with mercy.

The Magistrate, Samuel Edhiari, sentenced him to three months imprisonment on each of the two count -charge with an option of N5,000 fine.
