Western Sahara: Swedish Organization Urges UNSC to Extend Minurso's Mandate

Stokholm — The Swedish Western Sahara Committee, on Tuesday has urged the United Nations Security Council to extend the Mandate of the United Nations Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara(MINURSO),as learned from letter sent by President of this organization Jan Strömdahl, to Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon.

"We urge UNSC to urgently extend MINURSO's mandate to monitor human rights. We also ask the UN to carry out an impartial investigation about the Gdeim Izik events and its aftermath in the Moroccan military court."

"The violent dismantling of the peaceful protest camp Gdeim Izik, the subsequent period of repression and arrests of Saharawi human rights activists and the shameful trial in Rabat - outside Western Sahara - underlines the need for a strengthened UN monitoring in the occupied territory." reads the letter.
