Ethiopia: Sudden Death

In a very tragic accident, an ISUZU track driver run over 14 camels killing almost all of them on February 10, 2013 near Alemgena town located in Oromia Special Zone, 19Km south of Addis Abeba.

The route that stretches from Addis Abeba to Jimma and Gambela via Alemgena is a route that impacts the livelihoods of tens of thousands of pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, farmers, and traders living in diverse agro-ecological regions of Ethiopia.

There is an ongoing vibrant camel trade in Ethiopia involving close to 20 chain markets with a trade volume of about 3,000 camels a week during the peak seasons.
