Gambia: Region Two Wins Independence Athletics Competition

Region Two has won the Annual Inter-regional Independence Athletics Competition that was staged on Monday at the Serekunda West Mini-Stadium under the patronage of the president of the Republic, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh.

The one-day sporting event which was also sponsored by the Gambian leader was graced by dignitaries amongst them the minister of Youth and Sports, Honourable Alieu Kebba Jammeh; the minister for Basic and Secondary Education, Fatou Lamin Faye; and the British high commissioner to The Gambia, David Morley, amongst others.

The event saw the convergence of the six administrative regions battling it out for the giant trophy amid various supporters and sports enthusiasts who rallied behind their respective regions.

The winners went home with a giant trophy and individual cash prizes of D2, 500, D5,0 00, and D10, 000 respectively. Region Three finished as runner-up while Region One was awarded the the most disciplined team.
