South Africa: NUM Receives a Certificate to Strike Kolomela

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has been in dispute with Sishen Iron Ore Company‘s Kolomela mine over unilateral changes to conditions of service. The company has unilaterally changed shifts leading to longer hours with proper consultation. "We approached the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and we have been awarded a certificate of non-resolution.

We did not want to strike, but the company has pushed us too far and we are now going to exercise our right to strike” says Lucas Phiri, the NUM's Regional Coordinator in Kimberley. "We shall issue the company with a notice to strike very soon” says Phiri.
