Zimbabwe: Defaulter Sent to Jail

A Glen Norah man who defaulted on maintenance for the upkeep of his two minor children resulting in arrears accruing to US$1 950 was yesterday jailed for five months. Josphat Chimuponda (39) was on December 1 last year ordered to pay US$150 for his two minor children by a Chitungwiza magistrate.

Chimuponda failed to honour the court order and was arraigned before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo for contravening Section 23 of the Maintenance Act.

He was sentenced to 10 months in prison with five months of his sentence suspended for the next five years.

Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa prosecuted.
