Havana — The Angolan writer Maria Celestina Fernandes said last Friday in Havana, Cuba, that the Angolan authorities need to create school, municipal and communal libraries, aimed at stimulating the liking for reading.

In presenting the theme "Infant-juvenile literature", at the Havana International Book Fair, the writer said Angola still has a long way to go in the implementation of books production policies.

In her view, a deep work has to be done to train teachers who will be able to stimulate in students the habit of reading.

She said it is about time the authorities studied the possibility to subsidize the books publishers, so as to stimulate them to focus more on the publication of literature for children.

"There is a need to do something else, so that the publishers start placing more books in the market.

Currently it is only the National Institute of Cultural Industries and the Angolan Writers Association that have been releasing books for children", she regretted.

According to the writer, the publishers say that literature for children is very expensive to produce, because of the colours, reason why they have been appealing for state subsidy (...)", she said, further explaining that this cost in the edition process reflects itself in the expensive price of the book.
