Zimbabwe: New Film 'Chishamiso' Is Out

A NEW film, "Chishamiso" by Tariro Films in collaboration with United Kingdom-based production house, Oriit Films Ltd, is out. Written by Masimba Musodza, the film is set to go places in the same way that other local productions like "Tanyaradzwa" and "I Want A Dress" judging from its quality. Filmmaker Angeline Dimingo -- who produced and directed the short film "When Hunger Strikes" -- directed the movie.

It is the story of a young man, Declan (played by Melgin Tafirenyika), who returns to Zimbabwe after spending some time in the UK in order to be by his brother's side who is suffering from HIV.

As fate would have it, Declan falls into the clutches of a teenage prostitute Chishamiso (played by Dalma Chiwereva) who plies her trade in Harare, leading to another sad turn of events.

The story made me think about some of the reasons women are sucked into the world of prostitution, said Dalma, who plays the lead role of Chishamiso.

Dimingo is not new to filmmaking - she is a product of the Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe and has been in the film industry for close to 15 years.

Some of her film credits include working on Tsitsi Dangarembga's "Nyaminyami", "I Want A Wedding Dress", as well as Tawanda Gunda's award-winning television drama, "Manje So".

Probably one of her biggest acting roles was when she featured in Chipo's "Promise" which was an initiative by Soul City Project.

Festival appearances and television screenings have been lined up for later this year. The project offers many opportunities for the corporate world in Zimbabwe and abroad, Dimingo said.
