Nigeria: USAID, Intrahealth Dole Out Scholarship, Bursary

In a bid to increase the capacity of health personnel in health care delivery, a total 187 students in School of Midwifery and School of Health Technology in Edo and Delta States have received scholarship and bursary award from United State Agency for International Development [USAID] and IntraHealth International.

In a goodwill message delivered at the presentation ceremony in Benin City, Edo State, the USAID Representative in Nigeria, Mrs. Theresa Ononye said the objective of the programme was to ensure strong health system in Nigeria and increase the capacity of the beneficiaries in health care delivery.

According to her, it was meant to prepare health workers and enable them absorb the large number of patients that would be coming to them for treatment.

"While working with Capacity Plus, one other thing we are doing is the strengthen the system, capacity building of nurses, midwives and other community health extension workers so that they will be fully integrated in the health system.

Also speaking at the occasion, Country Director, Intra Health International, Samuel Ngobua said the overall goal of Capacity Plus, a project under which it gave out scholarship and bursary award in collaboration with USAID was to increase the availability of workers to meet the priority health needs of underserved populations through sustainable and scalable human resources for health interventions.
