Egypt: Ultraconservative Party Not to Boycott Parliament Election

Prominent leader of the Salafi (ultraconservative) Nour Party, Bassam al-Zarka, said in a press conference on Monday that the party will take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The elections will begin on April 22 and end in June, paving the way for the House of Representatives to convene for the first time on July 2.

Zarka said on Monday that the party wishes for clear guarantees for transparent elections including the objectivity of some ministries, the judiciary and administrators.

He added that the party aims to join forces with other parties of similar ideological background, suggesting that the door is open for alliances with other Islamists.

The Salafi Nour party acquired the second largest number of seats in 2011's parliamentary elections following the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party.
