South Africa: New MEC for Mpumalanga Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism

press release

Mpumalanga Premier, Mr David Mabuza has appointed former Finance MEC, Mrs Yvonne Nkwenkwezi 'Pinky' Phosa as the new MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (DEDET). She replaced Mr Norman Mokoena, former MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism who served in the portfolio since November 2010 until Monday, 18 February 2013.

Welcoming and introducing MEC Phosa to the senior management of the department, the Head of Department, Dr Vusanani Dlamini described her as a dedicated person who cares about the well-being of the people.

"MEC, as the management of this department, we commit to do our outmost best to assist you in carrying-out your mandate. You can put your trust on us, and we are sure that you will realise your vision," said Dr Dlamini.

Addressing the senior management of what she termed 'team dedet,' MEC Phosa said "no one is an island. I am ready to learn, and would rely on your wisdom and experience to realise my vision for this department. My mandate is to make a difference in this Department over the next 12 months."

She stressed that "to achieve our vision, we must work in collaboration but without compromising protocol and seniority. We have a huge responsibility to grow our economy in order to reduce poverty, unemployment and inequality."

"I believe I am surrounded by a strong and focussed team. Hard work, focus and excellence will see us through. Let us commit to perform our work guided by the values of the department."

"Our focus for the 2012-2013 audits is to receive a clean audit outcome. Let us start to prepare for the audit right now. I believe that if you focus, it is doable. We can achieve it," emphasised Mrs Phosa.

MEC Phosa was previously the Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature from 2004 until 2009, when she was appointed MEC for Finance until 18 February 2013. She also served as Deputy Speaker of the Legislature from 1999 until April 2004.
