South Africa: Bucket System Is an Insult to Eastern Cape Residents

press release

National Treasury must fast track the process of granting funds to the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipality to be used in the eradication of the demeaning bucket system in Walmer Township, Port Elizabeth.

IFP Spokesperson on Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Peter Smith MP said, "The Bucket system is an insult to Walmer residents after 18 years of democracy. These residents have never ever tasted the fruits of democracy; their government has neglected them. Government must provide basic services to all residents. This situation is totally inhumane and requires urgent redress."

"It also raises more questions than answers why it has taken so long for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro to seek additional funds to eradicate the bucket system and what the provincial department of co-operative governance has done or not done as the case may be in assisting the municipality with this problem. Is it because of mismanagement or insufficient budget? This must be investigated and the people responsible held accountable. What is however abundantly clear, is that the ANC government is once again failing the people of South Africa," said Smith.

The IFP calls on the MEC for Co-operative Governance, Mlibo Qoboshiyane and the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipal Mayor, Zanoxolo Wayile to work together and come up with a quick solution to this disaster. Furthermore, a change of leadership in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is imperative as the current leadership is a total failure.
