Nigeria: Al-Makura Closes Down Nasarawa Varsity

Lafia — Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, has ordered the closure of the state university (NSUK), following students' demonstration yesterday morning where Keffi-Lafia road was blocked for many hours by them.

Al-Makura also directed that all the students should vacate the institution with immediate effect.

The crisis started when students of the institution embarked on a peaceful protest over lack of water for about one week.

While the protest was ongoing, the school authority requested the assistance of the military at the Keffi barracks of the Nigerian Military when it seemed the the police could not curtail the crisis.

An eyewitness revealed to THISDAY that it was at the point of the military intervention that the students allegedly attacked the military personnel with stones, which eventually led to a fracas.

One student was reportedly killed, while about five others were severely injured, according to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abayomi Akeremale.

He said contrary to report that four students were shot by the police, only a student lost his life in crisis.

He disclosed that normalcy has returned.
