Gambia: Man Convicted for Defilement, Promises to Take Care of Victim and Baby

Principal Magistrate Fredrik Forster of the Brikama Magistrates' Court recently convicted and sentenced one Morro Sanyang to pay a fine of D35,000 in default to serve 6 months in prison.

This followed Sanyang's admission of the offence of defilement of an under-aged girl of 18 years at Busumbala village, West Coast Region.

According to the particulars of offence, between 2011 and 2012, the convicted person willfully had carnal knowledge of an under-aged girl of 18 years at Busumballa village in the West Coast Region.

When the charge sheet was read to the convicted person in the language he claimed to have understood, he admitted to the charge, as well as accepted the facts as narrated before the court.

In his plea of mitigation, he begged the court to temper justice with mercy, as he felt remorseful about what happened and promised to take care of the victim and the baby, as well as marry the girl if the family of the complainant accepted.
