With the increasing population of Uganda today, there lies a big problem of land inadequacy, and yet 80% of the Ugandan population depends solely in agriculture.
The issue of land has greatly remained a staggering thought to many in the country. Whereas there is a serious increase in the number of people living today, the land size remains fixed. The only way to get rid of this challenge is by embracing green house farming.
A green house is a kind of structure in which crops are grown. These structures range from small sheds to industrial structures.
Green house farming is where crops are grown in built structures with different types of building materials such as glass, plastic roofing and wall.
According to John Semakula the manager for irrigation and Agro Technical department at Balton Uganda Limited, there are two types of green house farming, the one of growing crops directly in the soil on open space.
The second one is where crops are grown in an artificial enclosed systems such as coco peat, vermiculite etc which are disease free and require controlled fertilizer application through irrigation.
This kind of technology is currently present in Uganda with an Israeli-based company called Balton Uganda limited.

Basic requirements to set up a green house
There are some very important materials that one may need so as to start a Green house farming project and these will also depend on which type of Green house farming do you want to start. The first things one should have are the funds which will help him or her to buy the required equipments for constructing the Green House and good weather for proper growth of the crops.
A farmer must have a good location which will easily allow sufficient light for healthy growth of the crops.
This is one of the most important factors towards a successful green house, without proper ventilation the crops will be affected and some of them will begin dying.
Ventilation ensures that there is proper supply of air for photosynthesis ,plant respiration and also helps vital pollinators to access the green house, these can be achieved by use of vents often controlled automatically and recirculation fans .The glass made shades or fiber are the most recommendable because they are durable to stand bad weather.
Availability of water source for easy irrigation since the Green house depends on irrigation most of the time.
A green house farmer must also have a dedicated care taker who always ensures that the crops are irrigated in time.
Getting the materials for a green house
Green House materials can be got from Balton Uganda Limited, an Israeli company which gets the raw materials from its country.
The structure can last for 15years without getting spoilt or 54 damaged.
In one acre one can have close to eight (8) Green houses especially those who wish to go into large scale commercial farming.
A farmer is provided all the necessary protective gears for using in the Green house.
Crops in a green house are less contaminated directly with chemicals because the latter is mixed in tank which water is later on passed to the plants using the tubes.
