Kenya: IDPs Forced to Repeat Standard 8

More than 20 pupils from the Vumilia IDP camp in Maai-Mahiu will not take up their form one places because of lack of school fees. Although they did well in the KCPE exams and got form one places in various secondary schools, they have been forced to repeat class eight because their parents are too poor to afford school fees.

The parents are now calling on the government to intervene and come to their rescue. "We cannot afford to pay the huge amounts that are being asked," said one of the affected parents Martha Njoki. "Getting a decent meal is itself a big problem and we rely on relief food from the government."
