Nigeria: Consumer Council Raids Property Firm for Fraud

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) has raided the premises of a property development firm, El-Salem Nigeria Limited in Abuja for shortchanging its customers running into millions of naira.

The CPC enforcement team ceased a number of operation materials from the firm and arrested the most senior officer on duty in the absence of the Managing Director for prosecution.

Speaking during the enforcement exercise, CPC Deputy Director, Surveillance and Enforcement, Engr. Sham T. Kolo said the council received several complaints from customers who deposited millions of naira with the developer but were not given the properties promised after many years.

"We have issues with them where consumers or their customers come to patronize their services and the services not rendered. The council intervened to make sure that whatever they have promised the customers, they go by it.

"After several mediation including serving them with the council's order which is the apex directives to such agencies to comply, they refused to respond and that is why we stormed the place," he said.
