Nigeria: Fire Destroys Rivers Varsity Females' Hostel

Port Harcourt — Property worth millions of naira was destroyed yesterday when an early morning fire destroyed a female hostel at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, RSUST, Port Harcourt.

Although no life was lost, some of the students who made efforts to put out the fire and those who tried to remove their valuables and personal effects suffered minor injuries.

It was learnt that the fire which started about 6am yesterday started from the roof of the one story building and consumed the entire hostel block, destroying property belonging to both students and residents.

The cause of the fire could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this story, but it was put off by the Rivers State Fire Department and that of the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC).

Contacted, the public relations officer of the university, Mr. Desmond Wosu, confirmed the incident and said the institution's authority would investigate it and assist the victims where necessary.
