Egypt: ElBaradei Says Will Not Join 'Sham Democracy'

Nobel Laureate and prominent opposition figure Mohamed ElBaradei said on Wednesday that the National Salvation Front (NSF), which he is a member of, is working on its boycott plan and possible alternatives.

"We will not deceive the people by joining sham democracy no matter what the internal and external pressures are," the former director of the Atomic Energy Agency and founder of the liberal Dostour Party posted on his Twitter account on Wednesday.

The NSF, Egypt's main opposition alliance, announced on Tuesday that it will neither participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections nor attend a national dialogue called by President Mohamed Mursi.

The four-stage election will begin on April 22 and end at the end of June, paving the way for the new House of Representatives to convene for the first time on July 2.

In an earlier post, ElBaradei had said, "Called for parliamentary election boycott in 2010 to expose sham democracy. Today I repeat my call, (I) will not be part of an act of deception."
