Egypt: Govt Backs Elections Committee Amid Attacks

Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said on Wednesday that the government is committed to providing all the necessary support to the high elections committee to manage the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The four-stage election will begin on April 22 and end at the end of June, paving the way for the new House of Representatives to convene for the first time on July 2.

After meeting on Wednesday to discuss the latest developments, the cabinet insisted in a statement that it will support the committee as it conducts a fair and free election despite the attacks and challenges.

Many opposition forces, including the main opposition alliance, have announced that they will boycott the April election.
