The traditional ruler of Kano, Northern Nigeria, escaped an assassination attempt.

The Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, has returned to his throne in Kano, after medical treatments in London, following a failed assassination attempt.

The Emir arrived Aminu Kano International Airport onboard a Nigerian Presidential jet at about 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

He was welcomed by a small crowd of traditional title holders of the Kano Emirate at the airport.

They escorted him back to his palace in a heavily guarded convoy.

Witnesses said the Emir looked "normal" on his return.

Gunmen attacked the Emir of Kano on a Saturday afternoon, January 19, killing his driver and orderly.

The gunmen laid ambush on the convoy of the Emir around the Zoo Road when he was returning from the

Murtala Mosque in the city where he had gone to attend a Quranic recitation competition.

He was subsequently flown abroad for medical attention.
