The Sokoto State Government has approved N690 million for the provision of 60 solar motorised boreholes and five water pumps in the 23 local government areas of the state.
Speaking to journalists in Sokoto, the state Commissioner of Environment, Dr. Jabbi Kilgori, said the scheme was aimed at tackling the problems of water being faced by some rural communities in the state.
According to him, the rural water scheme would go a long way in improving access to potable water, thereby reducing the problem of water borne disease in rural areas.
Kilgori explained that each borehole would be constructed at the cost of N9 million. The commissioner pointed out that some local government councils would get between two and four boreholes after completion of the project. He stated that the construction of the boreholes was expected to be completed in five months.
Kilgori said another contract was awarded for the replacement of water pumps for the old water works in the Sokoto metropolis at the cost of N149 million. He emphasised that the money was approved for the purchase of five water pumps to tackle the problem of erratic water supply in the Sokoto metropolis.
He disclosed that the water pumps at the old water works were damaged and completely worn out due to long period of use. "As you are aware, the water pumps at the old water works were damaged due to long usage spanning over 25 years instead of the normal life span of 10 years, hence the need for their replacement," Kilgori stressed.
The Commissioner added that the contract was awarded to Dinya Engineering Ltd and would be completed in three months.
In another related development, the state government has charged 2,300 trainees on poultry farming under the Conditional Cash Transfer of the Millennium Development Goals, to utilise the knowledge acquired to become self-reliant.
The state Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development, Alhaji Faruk Yabo, made the call at the recent graduation ceremony of 100 participants of the programme in Illela local government area of the state.
According to Yabo, the programme was initiated to train widows and less privileged persons on poultry farming and other vocational skills to become self-reliant. He said the initiative was aimed at reducing poverty at the grass roots and also enhance girl-child education.
He noted that at least 100 participants were currently undergoing training in each of the 23 local government areas in the state. He said already the participants of the MDG programme in Gwadabawa and Kware councils have completed their training.
The Commissioner disclosed that each participant was given a certificate and N5,000 allowance monthly, adding that the stipend would be paid for the duration of 12 months.
Yabo explained that the participants were also trained on how to mix assorted feeds to achieve maximum results in poultry farming. He added that the initiative was a collaboration between the state government, local government councils and MDG office geared towards tackling deprivation and squalor in rural communities.
Also speaking, the state Commissioner of Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Bala Hassan Abubakar, said the initiative was meant to address the problem of poverty and youth unemployment in the state.
Abubakar stressed that the state government was determined to alleviate suffering of needy persons in the state; hence the need for the participants to utilise the knowledge acquired for the benefit of the society.
