Liberia: Lawmakers Reconsider Sports Academy Bill

The Sports Academy bill earlier passed on Tuesday by the House of Representatives is expected to be reintroduced on the floor today following a motion for reconsideration filed by Montserrado County Representative Edwin Snowe, Jr.

Representative Snowe is former President of the Liberia football Association and ex-official of the world football governing body, FIFA. The Director of Press at the House Isaac G. Redd, confirmed via mobile phone last evening that Snowe's motion for reconsideration will be tested today.

Members of the House unanimously voted to pass the bill after more than a year in committee room. Margibi County District#2 Representative Ballah Zayzay is chief sponsor of the bill, which seeks to establish a sports academy for the country.

Rep. Zayzay told legislative reporters at the Capitol on Tuesday that when enacted into law, the bill will help in identifying young athletes across the country. He said the bill seeks to establish three sports academies in Bong County, the first ever in Liberia.
