Cape Town — One of the men arrested for the rape and murder of Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen was denied bail, it was reported on Thursday.
The Bredasdorp Magistrate's Court on Wednesday found that Jonathan Davids, 22, had not provided it with exceptional circumstances for his release and the public outrage over the crimes could not be ignored.
Davids bowed his head and stared in disbelief at the ruling, a decision which shocked supporters who had thought he would be set free.
Davids and co-accused Johannes Kana are the only two arrested for the crime on February 2 but Booysen, 17, had said from her hospital bed that five or six men were involved.
She had also named "Zwai", which was both the nickname of Davids and another man said to live in Zwelitsha.
Booysen was found severely beaten and disembowelled at a construction site. She died soon after being hospitalised.
Earlier she had spent several hours at a pub. Kana and Davids confirmed they had been at the same pub that night.
The case would reportedly resume on April 22.
