The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Riah Phiyega has noted with deep concern the media reports about the alleged brutal treatment of Mr Mido Macia (taxi driver) by SAPS members in Daveyton.

The matter is viewed by the National Commissioner in a very serious light and it is strongly condemned.

It can be confirmed that the matter was reported to Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for criminal investigation and the SAPS will corporate fully with IPID to ensure that justice is served. The Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Phumzo Gela: Gauteng Province has been instructed by the National Commissioner to immediately institute internal investigation into the incident and provide feedback as a matter of urgency.

Members of the community are urged to remain vigilant and continue to report all acts of crime irrespective of who is involved.
