SANTOS FC visited their newly recruited soccer star's school on Thursday to speak to scholars about how important education is in a footballer's career on Thursday, 28 February.
Welcoming the visitors (Santos) at Garlandale High School in Athlone, the school principal Dawn Crowie encouraged her learners to always strive for excellence. She explained the day was a special assembly for the school.
"Today is a very special day as your favourite soccer stars are here to address you on the importance of education. Always strive for excellence in whatever you do. Hard-work, dedication, countless efforts and sacrifices are needed to achieve excellence," said Crowie.
Fagrie Lakay, 16 year-old grade 11 learner was signed by Santos last year at a tender age of 15. He is also playing for SA's under 17. Speaking in front of his fellow school mates, a shy youngster thanked the school for its support.
"It is difficult to balance my life as a professional footballer and a learner. But my school is very supportive.
My fellow learners take notes for me whenever I am travelling with the national team. Teachers give me chances to write whatever I missed as a results of my busy schedule," he said to cheers.
Explaining the importance of education, Ian Palmer, Santos head coach echoed principal's sentiments. "With handwork, sacrifice and dedication you can achieve everything." He said he always takes interest in Lakay's school time table.
"Football is a short career. I played my professional football at the age of 16 just like him (Lakay). But it was cut short at the age of 23 when I sustained a career threatening injury.
I went to college and finished my studies. That is how important education is," explained Palmer. Reporter Mike Nkalane. Photographer Naym Hendricks.
