Kenya: Clans Fight in Mandera Over Poll

Tension is high at Rhamu in Mandera after a businessman was knocked down by a hit and run speeding vehicle as two communities clashed during election campaigns.

Haji Jule Ahmed was running to his house when he was hit by the vehicle as chaos erupted between Degodia and Garre communities. Several houses were burnt in the skirmishes.

Security agencies have been put on alert after it was reported that Degodia militia from Ethiopia have crossed into Kenya to support their relatives who are said to be under attack.

A man who was brandishing a pistol was disarmed by angry youth but managed to escape in the confusion although the pistol was recovered.

The chaos started minutes after the convoy of Bilow Kerrow, a senator aspirant on the URP ticket and Ibrahim Roba, a governor candidate on the same ticket, approached Rhamu DC's office and was pelted with stones allegedly Degodia youth.

Police and GSU were called in to quell the chaos. A Ceska pistol was recovered from a man who was spotted brandishing the weapon and was attacked by youth.

Meanwhile, a Kenya Red Cross employee at the Ifo camp in Dadaab on Tuesday reported to the police about the discovery of a hand grenade at the camp. The grenade was later recovered by police and detonated.

Police have launched a manhunt for two hardcore criminals who staged a daring escape from Manyani prison on Sunday.Mwanzia Muthoka alias Jafari Hassan, a robbery with violence convict who had been sentenced to nine years imprisonment and Kennedy Kipchumba serving twelve years for burglary and stealing disappeared after escaping from the security prison on Sunday night.

According to the officer in charge of Manyani prison Senior Superintendent of Prison Peter Maswai, Kipchumba, Muthoka and two others namely Henry Gitau Joseph a stock theft convicted serving a five years jail term and Peter Kimani Gichohi who was serving life sentence for robbery with violence cut the grill of their cells window and climbed over the perimeter wall to escape.

However, after a search was conducted, Gichohi and Gitau was rearrested and charged with escaping from lawful custody while their accomplices are still on the run.
