Kenya: Eldoret Chief Denies Hate Leaflets, Says Polls Will Be Peaceful

A chief in Eldoret has dismissed claims that leaflets are circulating ahead of the Monday elections. Langas chief Philip Chewmok asked residents not to live in fear because the police have intensified patrols to ensure the polls are peaceful.

Speaking to the press in Langas, Chemwok dismissed allegations that residents from certain communities have been asked to leave the area as baseless.

"We have not collected a single leaflet to prove the facts at the moment. We have even visited the scenes but all these allegations are meant to instill fear to people during this election period," he said. The chief said those who are leaving the area are going to vote in their rural homes where they registered in.

He warned that the government will act tough on anyone found breaking the law during the elections. Judith Acheing, a tailor the location that borders Eldoret town, said she is hoping that the elections will be peaceful.
