There is urgent need to reform our criminal justice system

At a conference on speeding up criminal justice project in Abuja last week, Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Lawal Gummi, expressed concerns about lack of inter-agency coordination in the investigations and prosecution of criminal cases in the country. Citing as example a recent visit he made to Kuje prison, he said it was evident that the agencies involved in the administration of justice in the country were working at cross-purposes. He added that the ongoing dispute between the police and the office of the Director of Public Prosecution over who has the authority to prosecute certain types of cases undermines the criminal justice system.
