Tension has heightened in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State, following the brutal murder of the commissioner of police, Kwara State command, Mr. Chinwike Asadu, by unknown gunmen in Enugu.
Asadu was shot dead on Saturday at Amorji Nike, near the densely populated Abakpa-Nike area in Enugu East LGA, about 10pm.
According to sources, the late Asadu was driving into his private residence when the hoodlums, suspected to have laid ambush around his residence, shot him.
It was further gathered that, prior to the incident, the late commissioner had seen a visitor off along with his driver and a police orderly posted to guard his residence from Abakpa police division, leaving behind the official escort team that came with him from Kwara State police command.
Sources said they were returning to the house after dropping the visitor when they suddenly noticed a bus trailing them.
It was gathered that as the commissioner and his aides branched into his street, the gunmen inside the bus began to fire at his vehicle.
The orderly was shot on the chest, stomach, hands and leg while the driver was shot on his legs, witnesses said.
One of the sources said: "The CP was driving into his personal residence in Amorji Nike after dropping a visitor that night. He was with a police orderly and his driver at the time of the incident. Just about 100 metres to his house, they noticed that a bus was trailing them and, before they could know what was happening, the gunmen had opened fire and killed the CP instantly. His orderly and driver were also shot and they were seriously wounded.
"The gunmen ran away in their bus before the CP's escort team that was inside his compound noticed what was happening. When the escort team and sympathisers rushed to the scene, they met CP Asadu and his orderlies in a pool of blood. They were rushed to the National Orthopaedic Hospital where doctors confirmed the CP dead. The other two policemen are now on admission at the hospital." The public relations officer of the Enugu State police command, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, has confirmed the incident.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the police orderly of the late Asadu, identified as Aloha Olaniyi, and his driver, Oliver Omeh, who were with him when the gunmen struck, received serious bullet wounds.
Olaniyi and Omeh were said to be lying critically at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu.
Mr Amaraizu said in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP: "The Enugu command of the Nigeria Police Force has commenced full-scale investigations into the alleged incident of killing of a commissioner of police.
"It was gathered that CP Chinweike Asadu in charge of Kwara State police command of the Nigeria Police was allegedly killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen on 02/2/13 at about 2145hrs as he was about to enter into his Enugu residence at Abakpa in Enugu East local government area of Enugu State.
"It was further gathered that he was rushed to Orthopaedic Hospital for assistance and there, he was confirmed dead by the doctor."
A source at National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, told LEADERSHIP that doctors were battling to save the two wounded police officers. The late Asadu was among the newly-appointed police commissioners for various state commands.
Police take over Asadu's residence
The residence of the slain Asadu in Enugu has been taken over by stern-looking police operatives.
It was gathered that policemen were moving into all the nooks and crannies of Enugu State to search for the killers of the late police chief. The deceased was a native of Amukwa community in Nsukka local government area of Enugu State.
A source claimed that his community has been existing without a traditional ruler for some time now.
It was gathered that the former traditional ruler of the community died a few years ago but has not been replaced because of the tussle over the position.
