Uganda: Besigye Intercepted On His Way to Court, Detained

Police on Tuesday morning intercepted former Forum for Democratic Change president Dr. Kiiza Besigye at his home in Kasangati as he departed for court in Kampala.

Kampala North police chief, Steven Tanoi, said they had obtained information that Besigye was planning to cause mayhem in the city on his way to Buganda Road court where he faces unlawful assembly charges.

Besigye is under preventative arrest at Kira Division Police post in Namugongo.

He was supposed to reappear in court today in case he is accused of managing an unlawful assembly that led to the murder of an Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) John Bosco Ariong.

Ariong was hit with a blunt object, purportedly a rock thrown from a building on Ben Kiwanuka Street, as Police dispersed a crowd of Activists mainly from the opposition political parties, who were in a procession.
