The President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate Gbehzohngar M. Findley says job creation remains the most workable remedy for fostering reconciliation following years of destruction in Liberia due to the past civil conflict. Pro-Temp Findley noted that it is the responsibility of government to put in place programs and strategies to bolster the creation of jobs especially for young people in the country.
The President Pro-Temp spoke in Harbel, Margibi County on Wednesday when he served as orator at programs marking the observance of the 67th Anniversary of the United Nations held under the auspices of the youth group, Students United for Reconstruction and Education (SURE).
Speaking on the Theme: "Finding Solutions for a prosperous Liberia: A way forward for National Development", Pro-Temp Findley said anything short of creating the avenues for people to earn a living, Liberia-as a fragile state-will be broken apart, thus eroding the enormous gains made in the country over the past seven years.
The President Pro-Tempore said another key solution to a prosperous Liberia is quality education. Pro-Temp Findley stressed that no nation can prosper in the face of a symbolic education system. According to the Pro-Temp, the past civil war caused a lot of inadequacies in the education system of Liberia, raising the need for a robust strategy comparable to standards around the world. "The damage done to this Country cannot be underestimated; Liberia needs the best instructors to prepare students for future challenges" he added.
The Pro-Temp also noted that "in order to sustain and maintain the prevailing peace, government must ensure that the proper legal system is put in place". He said people must be given justice and that the legal system must be able to address grievances amongst citizens in every part of the country. Pro-Temp Findley however warned that people, no matter what happened, must learn how to use dialogue rather than conflict to settle their differences. "Liberians should discuss their differences in a peaceful and respectable manner" the Pro-Temp insisted.
Speaking to students in the jam-packed Harbel Field House, Senator Findley said students, as future leaders of the country, have a cardinal role to play in sustaining the peace. He cautioned them to remain focused and positively engage their lawmakers using the non-violent approach to solve problems they face in school.
Pro-Temp Findley congratulated the United Nations for its numerous and invaluable contributions to Liberia and the level of support it continues to accord the government of Liberia in maintaining the peace and addressing the development challenges of the country.
