Liberia: Senate Reaffirms One China Policy

The Liberian Senate has committed itself to the upholding of the one China Policy. The Senate's action is sprung from a concurrence resolution by the 53th Legislature by adopting the Resolution of the National Transitional Legislative Assembly of 2005'.

Back in 2005, groups of citizens hailing from Grand Kru, assembled on capitol Hill and petitioned the National Transitional Legislative Assembly (NTLA) calling on that body to endorse and adhere to the principles of the One China Policy, (OCP)

After careful scrutiny of the 2005 resolution that called for the One China Policy by the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, the committee than recommended to plenary to reaffirm the present status quo in consideration of several factors. According to the committee, China, from all diplomatic indications has committed itself bilateral and diplomatic ties with Liberia. following the a substantive deliberations and broad consultations relative to the OCP, the Senate wasted no time to pass the resolution in compliance with the UN Assembly resolution.

The Resolution by the Senate states: "mindful of the fact that Liberia, being a founding member of the United Nations Charter should honor and adhere to all resolutions, conventions and protocols of the UN". The Resolution also stated that ..Liberia maintains a permanent diplomatic relationship with the People's Republic of China reflecting the will and fundamental interest of the Liberian people."

The reaffirmation of the OCP by the 53th Legislature signals Liberia's willingness to fulfill international obligation and specifically to the UN Resolution (No 2758) adopted by the General Assembly on October 25, 1971 which in details, recognized that the government of the People of the People's Republic of China is the sole Legitimate government representing the whole China.
