Mali: House Agrees With Executive - As Liberian Army Joins Ecowas Peace Keeping Troops in Mali

The Plenary of the House of Representatives has concurred with the Executive Branch to commit Liberia's troops to ECOWAS Military Intervention in the troubled West African State of Mali.

The West African Force is expected to confront rebel forces that are threatening the territorial integrity of Mali.

Plenary reached the decision Thursday during its 4th day sitting following a communication from President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

In her communication, the President informed Members of the House that the decision to commit troop from the Armed Forces of Liberia to join other sisterly West African States in Mali; was based on the recommendation of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and National Defense following an Extraordinary ECOWAS Summit on January 19 in Ivory Coast.

The House decision gives President Sirleaf the green light to conclude the pledge and initiate discussions with bilateral partners that have promised to provide logistical support.

Liberia's intervention is a major boost to efforts in stabilizing the West African Region.

The moves also satisfy foreign policy doctrine of reciprocity as it is recalled that Mali contributed troops to ECOMOG to help restore peace during the early stage of the Liberian Civil War.

For the past 10 months, three main Islamist groups have controlled northern Mali where they have imposed strict Islamic laws.
