Somalia: UN Security Council Moderates Somali Arms Embargo and Extends Amisom's Mandate for a Year

The U.N. Security Council on Wednesday (March 6th) unanimously adopted a resolution to partially lift its 21-year-old arms embargo on Somalia and to extend the mandate of the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) for a year.

The resolution also welcomed the Secretary General's review to consider a revised United Nations presence in Somalia. The resolution will allow the Somali government to purchase light weapons over the next year to strengthen its security forces for the fight against Al-Shabaab. It allows the sale of weapons, including automatic assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and other firearms with calibers of 12.7 mm or less to the Government of Somalia.
