Zambia: Police Nab 'Conman' Impersonating Zesco Chief

Police has arrested a Lusaka resident for swindling contractors out of undisclosed money for pretending to be a technical advisor of Zesco managing director Cyprian Chitundu.

The conman is alleged to have swindled Zesco suppliers money purporting to be an agent of Chitundu after promising them successful projects.

Zesco security manager Ben Mwanamwaka confirmed the arrest of Dennis Chibayo. Mwanamwaka said Chibayo was found in possession of documents supposedly signed by senior Zesco managers, Cabinet officials and State House.

He said Chibayo who was arrested in Livingstone is being detained at Lusaka Central Police Station and will appear in court soon on a charge of impersonation.

Mwanamwaka said most of the documents were purported to have been assuring suppliers that they will be offered contracts by Zesco. He said it was people like Chibayo who dented the name of the company that most of workers were corrupt and solicited kickbacks for awarding contracts.

"We would like to disassociate ourselves from this man. Dennis Chibayo is not a Zesco employee but a criminal and that is why we have handed him over to the police," he said.

Chibayo has since decided not to comment saying he will spill the beans in court for people to know that he is innocent.

"I won't comment because these things will have an appropriate time to be said when in court," he said.
