Kenya: Cord, Jubilee Attempt to Storm Verification Centre Thwarted

CORD and Jubilee chief agents attempted to storm into the IEBC verification centre at Bomas on Wednesday night. The high-powered team comprised of Cord's Johnstone Muthama, Fred Outa, John Mbadi, Farah Maalim, David Musila, James Orengo and Ruth Odinga and Jubilee's Onyango Oloo, Moses Kuria, Tirus Ngahu, William Kabogo and Moses Sakuda.

The group were protesting their being kicked out of the vote verification process by IEBC. Inside the VIP lounge, IEBC commissioners were busy verifying the results from the constituencies before announcing them.

A lone security officer resisted intimidations by the group who wanted him to let them in. He was later joined by more security guards who successfully thwarted the attempt.

Outa shouted at the IEBC officials through the window, accusing them of wasting Kenyan's Sh9 billion in a failed voter transmission system. He accused them of being worse than the late ECK chair Samuel Kivuitu.

"We are ready to die for the new Kenya. If you want to shoot us go ahead and do it. After all, how many Kenyans have died for this country before," Muthama, who was leading the group, said told the guards.

The group insisted that they had to be let in to verify the results as agreed but neither the guards nor the commissioners would let them in.

Kabogo suggested that they should take over the main podium at the auditorium used by the IEBC to relay the results. This, he said, would effectively stop any more announcements until they are involved.

However, by the time the group made their way through the security checks at the auditorium, IEBC commissioners were already announcing results from Cord strongholds.

Eventually, Muthama and Dalmas Otieno got audience with commissioner Yussuf Nzibo. It was agreed that all sides will nominate four representatives to observe the verification.
