Kenya: Losers in Kitale Protest Poll Results

There was unrest in Kitale today after more than five losers of key positions led their supporters to protest over poll results.

Noah Wekesa, Joel Gesuka, Kipruto Arap Kirwa, Joshua Werunga, Katama Ngeywa protested at the Kitale police station claiming election of Endebess constituency was rigged.

Yesterday, Endebess returning officer Joyce Namnyak was confronted at a cyber café in Kitale by Joshua Werunga who was the second in MP's race while filling form 36 which shows the results.

Werunga and his supporters were almost to rough up the returning officer alleging she was rigging the results but she was rescued by police.

The police then kept the results and released the returning officer. The supporters destroyed the returning officer's car.

The angry Wekesa and Kirwa surrounded by their supporters asked area OCPD James Mitugo and DCIO Paul Wachira to ensure the returning officer is arrested and prosecuted.

They demanded the county returning officer not to announce the winners of the governor, senate and women representative seats. "We are ready to suffer because of these results" Kirwa told the DCIO.

Wekesa said "There is no way we can allow the County returning officer to announce the results, until the officer is present to tell us what happened".

The commotion caused delays in announcing the Trans Nzoia County results as supporters of the winners on the other hand demanded the announcement of the results. A combination of armed security officers were forced to surround Kitale show ground to deal with any situation of violence.
