Kenya: Awiti Promises to Get Rid of the Water Hyacinth

HOMA Bay governor-elect Cyprian Awiti has promised to tackle the water hyacinth menace in Lake Victoria.

Speaking at Homa Bay County Council Hall after he was declared winner, Awiti said removing the weed will improve the lives of the residents and create more jobs for the youth.

Awiti beat Benson Mark Owiti of TNA and Philip Ochieng, an independent candidate. He got 294,143 against his Owiti's 5,240 and Ochieng's 2,922.

Awiti said he will ensure more jobs creation. "About 60 per cent of the youth are unemployed. We will fight to ensure that more job opportunities are created," he added.

Awiti promised to attract national and international investors to the county. "With my national and international connections, I will ensure that more investors are attracted to the county to improve the economy," he said. Awiti promised to improve the infrastructure saying it will be rated among the best in the country.
